The Rosary is one of those Catholic practices that immediately looks foreign to me. There are beads, repeated prayers, mysteries, and a lot of attention given to Mary. My first instinct is to ask where any of this is in the Bible.
I also hear the common story that Mary gave the Rosary to St. Dominic in basically its finished form. I do not want to accept or reject that story without looking at the history.
WHAT I AM STUDYING
I am tracing the pieces separately: repeated prayer, the Our Father, the words from Luke used in the Hail Mary, prayer beads, the Psalter, and the later organization of the mysteries.
I am also looking at early Marian prayers and medieval developments instead of treating “the Rosary” as though every part appears at the same moment.
A FEW THINGS I AM LEARNING
The familiar Rosary clearly develops over time. That much seems hard to dispute.
At the same time, some of its parts are older than its final form. Development and total invention are not necessarily the same thing.
WHAT I AM STILL UNSURE ABOUT
I still do not know whether the repetition is spiritually useful or just repetitive. I also do not know whether the attention given to Mary stays properly centered on Christ.
WHAT I WANT TO LOOK AT NEXT
I need to understand how Christians decide whether a later practice is a faithful development or an addition that goes too far.
